Studies show that people with written goals are much more likely to achieve those goals. So...
-- we're going to set some goals.
Your task:
- Set a goal or goals for yourself, ideally with no more than a 2 year time frame.
- Use the "SMART goals" format. Each letter represents a part of the goal (see below). Look over this link for SMART goal details and help.
- Specific - don't say "do better," say "improve my GPA"
- Measurable - don't say "lose weight," say "lose 10 pounds"
- Attainable - this is close to "realistic" but also means you should make a plan that lays out the steps you'll take to achieve your goals
- Realistic - don't say "become a better swimmer than Michael Phelps," say "improve my 50 meter time by 5 seconds"
- Time-bound - put a realistic time frame on your goal
- Mr. Crump's example: Through steady practice and concentration, my goal is to score a 44 or less on 9 holes of golf before Christmas (without cheating).
- S - a score of "44 or less" is specific
- M - the score is measurable
- A - the plan is through "steady practice and concentration"
- R - I've gotten a 49 twice before, so a 44 is realistic
- T - "before Christmas" is time-bound
- Type your goal(s). Be sure to include an explanation as to why you chose to set this goal.
- Tie it in with the Manatee strategic objectives shown below
- Which objective does your goal fit with? For my example...
- My goal fits with the Manatee strategic objective of "setting personal goals and a plan to achieve them." I made this connection since I don't compete against anyone, thus the goal is purely personal. I simply enjoy golf and enjoy pushing myself to try and get better.
- Save it with your name like this: rogercrump_goals and then...
- save it in your personal folder (bottom of the dock) and...
- drop it in my dropbox.
