Oscar Night is coming!

The Oscars will be held Sunday, 3/7/2010. You and your partner have a job to do. You have a company that handles everything for the stars for their big night. Your job is to make your star shine in every way possible, from the clothes he or she wears to the people they're seen with. In Hollywood, image is everything. The trick though is to look cool while still operating on a budget.

Here's what you need to do...

  1. Get yourself a partner in class. This will divide the task load in half.
  2. Come up with a name for your movie star management company. Your job: keep the stars happy, make them look good, give them the most for their money.
  3. Make a logo for your company. Keep it slick and simple and don't waste too much time fiddling with the logo! One way to make your logo...(1) open Appleworks and choose Paint to draw/type it up, (2) use command/shift/4 to capture the area on the page you want to save. Or, search online for possible logo generator.
  4. Put your info either in Microsoft Word (I think this is the best route to go), Keynote, or Power Point. First, show your logo (and your names). If you use Word, make a table like the one below by inserting a table with 8 rows and 3 columns.
  5. You can read up on the Oscars at the Wikipedia site or at http://www.oscar.com.
  6. Get a movie star to focus on. Choose someone nominated for an Oscar OR someone in a nominated movie. You'll have to make all the decisions for this person - movie stars have people like you that do the mundane stuff for them.
  7. Get him/her dressed to kill AND his/her date. Dress or tux designer?, shoes? Be ready to answer, "What are you wearing?" They will ask this on the red carpet.
  8. Accessorize. Jewelry?, watch?, Be ready to answer the question, "What's in your purse?" They will ask this. other accessory?
  9. Transportation. How will your star get there? How will he/she get to the after-party? Then home?
  10. Hotel. Assume your star doesn't have a "sweet crib" in Malibu. Get your star a room. Where? How many nights? Include the place's website URL.
  11. Speech. Write a 30 second thank-you speech for your star, just in case he/she wins. The speech should sound surprised, humbled, thrilled, and sincere.
  12. After-party. AFTER the show might be more important for your star's image as DURING the show. Where will your star go after the awards? Find an L.A. restaurant or night spot that's cool enough for your movie star to attend. Include the place's website URL.
  13. Charge a fee. You ain't doing this for free sweetie-pie! How much will you charge your star for your services?
  14. When we're all done, we'll have students vote on who has the best Oscar package.

What you'll turn in.

You'll turn in a proposal with a budget. Even though your star likes to act big and rich, he or she has bills to pay too and wants to keep the price as low as possible without sacrificing their cool image. This is the challenge: to provide the best package at the best price. You have a few options for this...

  • Make a chart like the one below in Appleworks. Include pictures where you can. The chart has 8 rows and 3 columns.
  • Put the same information in a Keynote or Power Point presentation. Be sure to have your budget as one of your slides.
  • Another option is to use "Comic Works." If you're familiar with this program, you could make something very attractive visually. Be sure your budget is included.

Put your logo on top.
