I. Women and minorities

     A. Women

          1. while men were at war, many went to work for the 1st time 

          2. women used machinery and built the tools of war

          3. many women joined the military 

     B. Minorities

          1. Japanese-Americans

               a. after Pearl Harbor, there was distrust of J-A

               b. J-A were rounded up, sent to internment camps

               c. many lost their homes and businesses

          2. African-Americans

               a. served in the military in segregated units

               b. most famous--Tuskegee Airmen

          3. Native-Americans

               a. many served in the military

               b. most famous--Navajo "wind talkers" who spoke in "code" (their native language)

II. Production

     A. America's #1 contribution to the war--resources! (troops, supplies, equipment)

     B. example--Henry Ford's Willow Run factory could build a B-24 bomber in 60 minutes

III. Life at home

     A. everything at home was impacted by the war

     B. examples

          1. rationing of food

          2. the government oversaw jobs

          3. propaganda came through newspapers, movie clips

          4. you were expected to be for the war (to do otherwise was unpatriotic and was questioned)
