Were the ideals of the Revolution realized in the U.S. founding documents?

 

  1. Draw a chart
  2. Identify the ideals of the revolution
  3. Make a judgement as to whether the ideal was or was not placed in the founding documents (Declaration of Independence or Constitution)
  4. Write  summary  answering the question above.

Introduction- Background information about American Revolution and the founding of the new government

 

Thesis-  Should say what extent the Constitution lived up to its revolutionary ideals

Example-  Enlightenment philosophers and the American colonists’ experience prior to the American Revolution had a profound effect on the ideals implemented in the Constitution

 

Example- Enlightenment philosophers and American colonists’ experience prior to the American Revolution had partial influence on ideals developed into the Constitution but were fully realized in modern times.

 

Example- Enlightenment philosophers and American colonists’ experience prior to the American Revolution were only partially fulfilled during the revolutionary period, but have been fully realized by modern times.

 

Body I- colonists’ experiences

(a)   taxation without representation, Stamp Act

(b)   salutary neglect and power struggle- Quartering Act, Coercive Acts

(c)   weakness of the Articles and creation of new Constitution- Importance of the Bill of Rights, used to protect individual rights, amendment process

 

Body II-  Enlightenment philosophers

(a) John Locke- natural rights, Declaration of Independence, have Americans enjoyed these rights?

 (b)  Baron Montesquieu, separation of powers, 3 branches, checks-and- balances, enjoyed?

( c)  Rousseau, govern with consent of people, 9th amendment, leaves power to states/people, amendment process relies on state/people, enjoyed

(d)Voltaire, free speech, 1st amendment, enjoyed?

 

Body III-  Extent Constitution met revolutionary ideals

(a)   initially- who enjoyed these rights and responsibilities- white men

(b)   women, African Americans, and others- did they get these rights initially

(c)   Modern times- who enjoys rights now- does everyone get equal rights?

(d)   Look at Amendment 13, 14, 15, and 19
