Create a visual representation (something to look at) of national unity before, during, and after the Civil War. This can be a group project (no more than 5). You'll be responsible for your part only.
Possible products: poster, diorama, mobile, sculpture, drawing, painting, papier-mâché, comic strip or graphic novel, slide show, your own idea?
Pick one of the topics below. Once you have your number, you don't need to hit on EACH item listed in parentheses. Focus on one or two. For example, on #2, just choose one of the topics in parentheses--don't try to do them all.
- formation of political parties (Democrat, Free-Soil, Republican)
- causes and effects of westward expansion (ideas: Mexican Cession, popular sovereignty, where to build the transcontinental RR, Kansas-Nebraska Act, Bleeding Kansas, John Brown
- sectionalism that led to the Civil War (ideas: tariff, slavery, roads/canals/railroads, underground railroad)
- conflict and violence of the Civil War (scenes from the war itself)
- efforts to rebuild and reunite during Reconstruction (ideas: Freedmen's Bureau, military districts of the South, "carpetbaggers")
If you want to work as a group, you might want to get organized by making a chart like this:
