Lewis and Clark "field trip"

Page history last edited by crump 7 months, 4 weeks ago

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were a great team. They both did everything, but Lewis was more of the military leader and doctor while Clark was the record keeper and journalist.

They had three missions:

  1. Find the best route to the Pacific.
  2. Establish relations with the Indians.
  3. Record what they saw for the advancement of knowledge.

We'll focus on #3. The Lewis and Clark journals stunned Americans when they were read. The journals described and often illustrated many, many new things such as plants, animals, geologic and geographic features. They each took time to carefully record the details of a new find--often a bird would get a full page description as well as a drawing.

Your task:

  1. Collect a "specimen" from our "field trip."
  2. We'll bring it back and then you are to (1) draw it and (2) describe it.
  3. We want details and accuracy! Size, weight, texture, smell, shape, exactly what size? how many leaves? serrated? smooth?
